Inspirational Thinking
In a world recovering from a global pandemic, disrupted by war and conflict, rife with misinformation and conspiracy theories, how can we create classrooms that give children hope and inspire them to be active agents of change to create the world they want to live in? Pursuit of this complex challenge is advanced when we design learning around inspirational thinking. Inspirational thinking sits at the intersection of critical, creative and prospective thinking. Critical thinking is certainly a pre-condition for inspirational thinking, yet it is also an insufficient condition. Without the generation of new ideas to move the world forward, a critical examination of the current world could leave one with a sense of despair. Similarly, while creativity is also a pre-condition for inspirational thinking, it too, on its own is insufficient. The generation of new ideas that do little to contribute to the common good may lead to innovations but not lead us closer to the world we desire. When students engage in inspirational thinking, they experience the curriculum through a prospective or future-oriented lens whereby they transfer their learning through critical, creative and collaborative thinking in search of ways to contribute to building a future in which everyone can flourish. During this session, participants will explore practical ways to teach at the intersection of critical, creative and prospective thinking including the framing of tasks and the effective use of powerful instructional strategies.
