(PRE-REG MAX 30) Not Monopoly... Engaging Students Using Unorthodox Board Games
In the last two decades, a tabletop gaming revolution has occurred. From Dungeons and Dragons, to hundreds of Euro-Style games, like Settlers of Catan. People are more commonly coming together to socialize through tabletop games. These games engage students in higher level thinking, collaboration/competition, and literacy/numeracy skills. But with the number of games out there, teachers who casually game (or don't) may find looking for the right game for their classes overwhelming. In this session, we will be introducing various board games that can engage students in the classroom. Be prepared to step outside of your comfort zone, and try a game that's not Monopoly.

Write On: Hands-On Activities To Get Your Students Going
Alexis Kelly will be presenting this session on behalf of Miranda.

Poetry can be a tough sell to students who would rather be on Instagram or listening to the top 40.  But what if they didn't have to choose between the two?  What if Instagram poets and chart-topping hits were studied alongside sonnets and haikus?  What if it were less about teaching kids how to write poetry and more about learning the limitless styles there are to choose from?  Whatever the style or personality of the student, this workshop explores how to create a versatile and open-ended poetry unit that allows these young poets to find their voice.

While many students have the ability to create Pulitzer-worthy pieces, getting pen to paper can be somewhat of a challenge. Especially in youth, where inhibitions and insecurities are at an all-time high, putting ourselves out there creatively can be daunting. Using a series of prompts and games, however, this workshop will take some of the pressure off of the blank page. Giving students an “in” regardless of their abilities and interest, we will try some hands-on activities that will get the ink flowing from even your most reluctant writers!
